As a company that loves dogs, we can say it is very distressing to lose a pet to paralysis tick.  These ticks are common in the Gold Coast hinterland, but not so common in the less bushy suburban areas.

However, all areas of bush are likely to contain a few ticks, and a simple walk with the dog in a park may lead to the dog picking up a tick.

Every day, especially in summer, we would advise you to give your dog a good cuddle and while you do it, run your fingers thoroughly through the dog's coat.  If there is a tick, you will find a lump the size of a pea.  DO NOT squeeze the tick!  Carefully locate it, kill it with a brief squirt of fly spray, then pinch it at the base to remove it, or if you are unsure, take the pet to the vet to have it removed.

Many ticks are only bush ticks, and won't harm your pet, but they should be removed straight away if you find them.

The signs of paralysis tick are loss of appetite, weakness in the back legs, and a croaky bark.  Do not delay if this happens!  Rush your pet to the vet for antivenin.

If you live in a bushy tick habitat then there are many sprays and treatments available from your vet to reduce the risk of tick attack.

We are able to treat ticks temporarily by generally spraying the bush, lawn and surrounding areas of your property.

Lice

Most people are bothered by head lice at some time in their lives, and this is easily treated by washing your bedding and using hair treatments available from the chemist.

If you have birds nesting in the roof, then you may get bird lice in your home.  These are hard to see, but if you look carefully you will see them with the naked eye.

They cause skin irritation, but they can only live on birds, not on people.  They might bite you, and you will likely come up in little red blotches.

Bird lice live in bird nests, and on birds.  They usually enter homes on windy days after the wind blows them out from a nest (usually in your eaves) and in through a window.

Treatment

Lice are best treated at the source. Nest removal and bird proofing come first. Lice with-in the home can be treated with a surface spray, aerosols can be sprayed, as well as other forms of space spraying that utilise a micro-droplet.

Dust Mites

These little creatures are everywhere, and generally not a problem unless you are the highly allergic type of person.  They live in our pillows, on our skin, and in your carpet.  Simply good cleaning is the best way to keep their numbers down.

On the other hand, paper mites or book mites as they are sometimes known, can be very annoying especially in the workplace.

These mites are most irritating and occur in offices where paper is stored for long periods of time.  They feed on mould and fungi that forms on old stored paper.

They often cause skin irritation and general discomfort in the workplace.

Treatment

We offer a professional treatment using special pesticide smoke generators. You will be required to seal and vacate your premises for a minimum of 4 hours. We will help with the adjustments to security and smoke alarms.

Paper mites can also be treated with a surface spray, aerosols can be sprayed, as well as other forms of space spraying that utilise a micro-droplet. If possible, old stored paper should be thrown out, or moved to
alternate storage.
